Job Requirements of Diesel Service Technician-FLW:
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
Diesel engine, construction equipment and/or truck engine training and certifications through accredited technical schools or relevant military experience preferred. - Minimum 3 to 5 years previous hands-on work experience as a diesel technician repairing Caterpillar or competitor heavy equipment or applicable diagnostic and troubleshooting experience as a technician in an automotive or truck engine repair shop.
- Ability to read and comprehend moderately difficult computer-based schematics, specifications, service and parts literature, technical bulletins, safety manuals, and other related publications.
- Basic mechanical systems knowledge of diesel engines/engine failures, electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Proficient in the use of mechanical test equipment.
- Ability to safely use material handling equipment and tooling and wear company required PPE (protective eyewear, gloves, harnesses, footwear) during a shift assignment that could last between 8 and 10 hours.
- Good problem solving skills, detail oriented, and ability to work with a high level of accuracy.
- Good computer skills using related information system applications (ex: SIS, DBS).
- Ability to perform duties with a sense of urgency, exceeding customer expectations.
- Ability to work in a dynamic fast paced service environment.
- Ability to work standard five-day work schedule, including daily overtime, and occasional weekend hours as necessary.
Other Job Requirements:
- Possess a complete set of basic mechanic hand tools including drives, sockets, and wrenches.

Diesel Service Technician-FLW
Puckett Machinery Company is the Caterpillar® heavy equipment, rental services, and power systems dealer for central and southern Mississippi. As the industry leader in our territory with 15 locations, helping our customers succeed is our number one priority.
We are seeking entry level and experienced Diesel Service Technicians at our state of the art dealership in Flowood. We offer excellent pay, the opportunity to elect a 4 day workweek schedule with occasional after hours/weekend work, scheduled overtime, comprehensive benefits, and specialized technical training.
The Service Technician is responsible for the set-up, repair, service, diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and installation of replacement parts on Caterpillar diesel powered heavy equipment. This is an entry level skilled trade position working independently and/or with guidance from service mentors in a service shop setting. The position reports to the Shop Supervisor.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:
- Disassemble, assemble, and install components and parts, including but not limited to powertrain, hydraulic, electrical AC/DC, and diesel engines in accordance with all prescribed quality and safety standards.
- Identify the problem and cause of failure through logical troubleshooting steps.
- Clean, repair, recondition, and maintain equipment and components.
- Test, measure, and adjust engine and machine systems and components.
- Research and determine reusability of parts in accordance with published manufacturer guidelines.
- Coordinate the ordering of replacement parts with supervisor.
- Prepare and submit detailed, complete and legible service reports of all inspection and repairs performed using prescribed forms and procedures in a timely manner.
- Keep supervisor regularly apprised of status of assigned repair jobs and assist in addressing customer questions and concerns.
- Prepare, inspect and test operate machines prior to delivery.
- Maintain work area, tools, and equipment to promote a clean and safe environment.
- Maintain a professional and proper personal appearance at all times.
- Keep up to date with developments in tooling, technologies and systems.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
