Field Service Tech-Preventive Maint (FLW)

We are seeking an experienced and customer-focused Preventive Maintenance Field Service Technician based at our service department in Flowood. We offer competitive compensation (base hourly rate + commission), great benefits, paid uniforms and laundry, and specialized technical training.

The Field Service Technician-Preventive Maint (CSA) is responsible for performing general preventive maintenance/minor repairs and performing telematics installation/troubleshooting/repairs on Caterpillar and allied diesel powered heavy equipment, primarily during service calls at customer locations, using a field service truck in a safe, timely, efficient, and courteous manner. This position will require working hours in addition to the normal work schedule and for emergency calls. This is an intermediate level skilled trade position working independently in a field setting.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  • Perform all required routine preventive maintenance (replacing fluids, filters, hoses, etc.) on customer machines in accordance with all prescribed policies and procedures as well as all quality and safety standards.
  • Perform minor disassembly, assembly, and installation of components and parts, including but not limited to powertrain, hydraulic, electrical AC/DC, and diesel engines in accordance with all prescribed quality and safety standards.
  • Prepare and submit detailed inspection reports (including digital photographs) of all machines serviced.
  • Keep supervisor & coordinator regularly apprised of status of assigned jobs. Maintain regular communication with customers to keep them apprised of status and schedule of PMs to be performed and to address any questions or concerns.
  • Perform installation, troubleshooting and repair of telematics devices that are installed on customer machines.
  • Maintain perpetual inventory of all parts and supplies needed to ensure that items are stocked and readily available on the service vehicle. Requisition replenishments in accordance with all prescribed company policies and standards.
  • Troubleshoot field service delivery-related problems (weather, traffic, breakdowns) to resolution in real time.
  • Maintain all motor vehicle logs, documentation, and driving standards as may be required by the Department of Transportation (DOT), federal/state authorities, and the company.
  • Inspect all assigned vehicle and equipment daily and report repair and/or maintenance requests to designated manager. Maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and fueled state of readiness.
  • Perform minor roadside repairs and basic preventive maintenance to assigned vehicle.
  • Maintain a professional and proper personal appearance at all times.
  • Keep up to date with developments in tooling, technologies and systems. Maintain currency with all technical diagnostic software (CAT ET).

Job Requirements:

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
    Diesel engine, construction equipment and/or truck engine training and certifications through accredited technical schools or relevant military experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years previous hands-on work experience as a diesel technician repairing Caterpillar or competitor heavy equipment or applicable diagnostic and troubleshooting experience as a technician in an automotive or truck engine repair shop.
  • Ability to read and comprehend moderately difficult computer-based schematics, specifications, service and parts literature, technical bulletins, safety manuals, and other related publications.
  • Basic mechanical systems knowledge of diesel engines/engine failures, electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to safely use material handling equipment and tooling and wear company required PPE (protective eyewear, gloves, harnesses, footwear) during a shift assignment that could last between 8 and 11 hours.
  • Be at least 21 years old and be able to maintain DOT medical certification, and other related licenses as required by the Department of Transportation, federal, and/or state statutes.
  • Must have and maintain a driving record (MVR) which adheres to the company’s motor vehicle policy standards.
  • Good knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures within the transportation industry, including DOT regulations.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Good problem solving skills, detail oriented, and ability to work with a high level of accuracy.
  • Good computer skills using related information system applications (ex: SIS, DBS, CAT ET).
  • Ability to perform duties with a sense of urgency, exceeding customer expectations.
  • Ability to work independently in a dynamic fast paced field service environment.
  • Ability to work standard five-day work schedule, including daily overtime, and occasional weekend hours as necessary.

Other Job Requirements:

  • Possess a complete set of basic mechanic hand tools including drives, sockets, wrenches, and any tools that may be required to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Possess a smartphone equipped with functionality to use inspection apps, take pictures, and connect wirelessly.
